When I began my studies in the Fall of 1980, I was fortunate enough to have chosen a program which provided me with an exceptionally diverse education in art and design. Through the Bachelor-of-Fine-Arts degree program at Iowa State University's Design Center, I received an additional year of studio training in Graphic Design, with an emphasis on traditional skills (drawing, painting, printmaking, etc.). Two more years of Art History helped prepare me for a future in the arts. While I may have spent the past two decades largely devoted to the craft of graphic design, I have always maintained my desire to work in the traditional craft of hand-pulled prints. In particular, I have been inspired by the artists of the past century like the Beggarstaff Brothers, Lucian Bernhard, and Joseph Leyendecker. More contemporary printmakers like Michael Schwab and David Lance Goines, have also proven to be huge influences on my work. |
